Bikila & Melanie are just flat out impressive – or shall I say Dr. Bikila & Dr. Melanie? :) They have lots in common: they are both soon to be lawyers and they are both madly in love… with each other :) The connection they have is easy to see. They are both so thoughtful and kind. I also couldn’t help but notice that Bikila and his groomsmen are such gentlemen! The entire day and all of the family and friends involved were just so calm. It made for a beautifully peaceful day :)

While visiting our friend Eric in Portland last month, he had some visitors from Germany staying with him. Perhaps some of you have heard of the term couch surfer? Well, Katharina & Philipp are currently couch surfing their way up and down the west coast. They found our friend Eric on www.couchsurfing.org, a place for travelers to find people all around the world willing to host backpackers in their homes. Such a rad concept :)

When we left Portland, we invited the “German couch surfers” to stop by when they came down to SoCal. So, a couple of weeks ago they were able to stay with us for a few days. The timing was… interesting, as we had just moved the day before! They were kind enough to help us organize our home and they even slept among half empty boxes. It was great to see them again – we somehow left Portland without a single picture of them, so this time we made sure to snag a few :) The goal of their journey (or should I say Philipp’s goal) is to skate the raddest skateparks along the west coast. Katharina is able to document their adventures and has even picked up skating too! They are such a cool couple and it was awesome getting to hang out with them :)

Our last days of vacation *sigh*. We crammed a lot into these four days! From Seattle back down to Orange County, we made pit stops in Bend, Crater Lake, Mt. Shasta, Lake Tahoe, and Yosemite. The weather was amazing! And by amazing I mean sunny and HOT.

But first, a little video recap of the whole trip:

We stopped by Smith Rock in Oregon and conquered.

I STILL wake up craving Sparrow Cafe’s avocado and egg croissant. Bend, you are a selfish town to keep that goodness all to yourself.

This is the face of disbelief when first laying eyes upon Crater Lake. That water is un-stinking-believably blue!

The hike back up nearly killed us, but going down to water level was well worth it.

This little guy broke my heart. He must have fallen from his nest. He still had his chick feathers and couldn’t fly, so he just stayed perched on this rock and chirped endlessly for his mom :(

I always avoid handing over my camera to strangers. So we end up getting tons of pics like this :)

And so ends our family vacation pictures. It seems so distant already, but it was oh-so-delightful :)

There are a lot of DIY brides out there, but I dare say none of them hold a candle to Kaitlin! Every detail of Anthony & Kailin’s wedding had so much thought put into it – as well as a little sweat and blood! Kaitlin did nearly everything herself – flowers, table decor, you name it! And aside from having a beautiful wedding, Anthony & Kaitlin are just awesome. So much fun to be around. It was a joy spending the day with them, their friends and family :)

Phew! What a whirlwind this week has been! I apologize for our blogging hiatus, but you’ll soon see why in posts to come!

Meet my great, great grandparents from Sweden.

And their son, my great grandfather, Fingal. Plus he and my great grandmother’s wedding invitation.

On the left, my other great, great grandparents from Sweden. On the right, three generations: my great, great grandmother (Emma), my great grandmother (Elizabeth), and my great aunt (Irma).

Fun tid-bit: these are my great, great uncles (my great grandfather’s brothers). Two sets of identical twins – how crazy is that?!

The iPad comes in handy yet again! It was the cutest thing. After flipping through pictures, watching videos and scrolling through our blogsite, my aunt Irma asked inquisitively, “So… these are negatives?” Without hesitation, Ross (my second cousin) answered, “Yes.”

Sorry to bore you with family history, but I find these things so interesting! To hear family stories from those who have experienced so much, and to see photographs of your ancestors’ faces… it just boggles my mind. It makes me grateful, yet again, to be a photographer. Capturing people’s history and preserving memories is such an importantly awesome thing to do.

During our visit to Seattle, we drove out to Yakima to visit my great uncle Kermit. He lives on the apple farm that my great grandparents began. Care for a little family history? Swell! Well, my great grandfather, Fingal Gothberg, came over from Sweden and mined for gold in Alaska. He then headed down to Washington and bought up a bunch of land in Yakima (a predominantly Scandinavian area at the time). He started an apple farm, and over the years sold off his acres to fellow farmers. My oma and her two sisters were born in the house that Fingal and my great grandmother, Emma, built (pictured below). My uncle Kermit eventually took over the farm and has lived there his whole life. How many people can say they lived in one home their entire lives?! So cool :)

My oma and opa were married in the living room 65 years ago. It’s so cool to visit a place that holds so much family history!

This fellow is seriously one of the sweetest, most genuine, happy people you’ll ever meet! Reminds me a lot of his sister (my oma) :)

And he’s funny, too!
